Attached or free lobe? How to choose the perfect earrings according to your body shape
EARLOBE ATTACHED OR FREE?
The mystery of earlobes: a detail that changes everything
Earrings, much more than a simple accessory, reveal an infinite number of subtleties linked to the morphology of the ears and, more specifically, their lobes. But what exactly is a lobe? It is the fleshy and supple lower part of the ear, whose shape, size, and thickness vary from one person to another. This small anatomical detail, influenced by genetics, plays an essential role in the choice of earrings and the balance of the face.

This genetic mark is relevant in the right choice of ear jewelry: there are 2 types of lobes.
Two, only two!
There are only two types of earlobes, depending on a very specific criterion: how they are attached to the nape of the neck:
Attached lobes: Attached lobes are those that are directly attached to the cheek without forming a distinctive crease between the lobe and the rest of the ear. In this case, the lobe appears to fuse with the adjacent skin without forming a clear separation.
Free lobes: The free lobes are separated from the rest of the ear by a distinctive crease between the lobe and the cheek. This creates a clear separation between the lobe and the adjacent skin.

These earlobe characteristics are primarily aesthetic and anatomical. Some people prefer attached lobes, while others find loose lobes more aesthetically pleasing, but there is generally no direct link between earlobe morphology and personality or character traits.
In short, the distinction between attached and loose earlobes is simply about the shape and physical structure of the earlobes and generally has no deeper meanings in terms of personality or character.
Tethered lobe is what is called a “recessive genetic trait” and is seen in a quarter of men, while it affects 36% of women.
The other type of lobe, the so-called “free” one, would therefore be the most common in France.
(Ref: Mr. Tisserand's most recent anthropological study carried out in 1945, entitled Variations in the insertion of the ear lobe in the French population .)
The attached lobe seems to have been more common in the past and is tending to disappear.
Tips on what types of jewelry from our collection will be appropriate for attached and detached lobes:
For attached earlobes:
- Choose fine, lightweight jewelry that elegantly lengthens the ear without crushing it.
- Small ear studs: OHANA , Stella STARS, Lucky CLOVERS
- Fine hanging earrings (avoids the plated effect): TOLO-GEO , TOLO-SPHERE , Guava and Pearls
- Creoles free from the face: MINI- FLAMENCO , DELICIA rings
- Dangle-type attached jewelry can be a good option, as they can add length and elegance to the appearance of attached lobes. Among other attachments, through-type attachments would benefit attached lobes. TOLO-GEO or TOLO-SPHERE, Guava and pearls
- V-shaped earrings, that is, the top is stronger than the base which ends in a point, are to be avoided (GEO) PACHAMAMA
- A style that works well is the COCORICO which allows it to sit closely on the lobe and create a perpendicular effect with the lobe which is perfectly suited to the attached lobe it is very elegant! (COCORICO)
- If you opt for hoop earrings, choose hoops that will hang off your face instead of small sleeper earrings to prevent them from getting caught on your face. The Kiwi style will look beautiful on these types of earlobes. The small Shell earrings will look stunning on these types of earlobes.
- The SKY waterfalls are magnificent in any case!
For detached earlobes:
- Detached earlobes generally have more space since they do not press against the face, so they can accommodate large jewelry. You can opt for larger, more eye-catching earrings. ( CHERRY , TANGO , CASSE-TETE )
- Loose earlobes tend to stretch over time, so it's best to wear lightweight jewelry to reduce the risk of earlobe deformity. The ATLAS Rings are thick and ultra-light, perfect for these earlobes. You can elegantly wear thicker, larger rings, or smaller rings, depending on your face type.
- Choosing long or dangling earrings will also depend on your face shape and personal preferences.
- GEO, PACHAMAMA, MARTINI , MAUI are good choices for loose lobes. Oasis and Nebula worn with pearls will look beautiful on her ears.
By understanding these nuances, you're able to offer earrings that not only look aesthetically pleasing but also take into account earlobe comfort and mobility. This demonstrates a genuine focus on customer satisfaction and a quality user experience.
